I have finished my Christmas fest assignments. The PoT one is exactly seven times longer than the Smutmas one, and they both suck unrelentingly. I don't know if this is the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning, but it's the end of something. I can't quite process what is happening to me. It seems so unfair that my writing has begun to disimprove with no warning or reason.

Hotmail won't let me read my messages. This vexes me greatly.

Lost In Translation vastly improved upon a second viewing. This may in no small way be due to my current love affair with all things Japanese. What do you think he said at the end? 'Let us abide on these shores and set up a small shop selling yaoi and hair mousse'? Tell me, distract me, shock me if you can.

Now I'm going to read fanfic in French. Goodbye.

If you need a beta for anything, let me know, even for POT but uh. I know nothing. I'M BORED, SAVE ME. Also see my post about the Robin Hobb essay thing.

I think it was probably something like "you need a breathmint."

Ooo, fanfic in French! I can watch movies in French and know 70% of what they are saying, I often sit there and translate like a lamer.

That would be awesome. I doubt you need to be up on PoT to beta it, but it badly needs a beta. The HP wouldn't be ready to release to editing until tomorrow at least, so, like, when are you free?!

Oh god, you unromantic soul, you. :D

I'm reading this. I'm heartily amused by the fact that I'm three paragraphs in but I GET WHAT THEY ARE SAYING, I DO.
Gin: SLAMMERINO!!!!!backinblack on September 15th, 2006 10:50 pm (UTC)
I'm free all this week and free right now and JUST FREE, email me the POT at ginandironic@gmail -- there's a dot com at the end of that, obviously. :)) And the HP is fine, send it whenever. I'm a quick beta, as you probably recall. :>

lkasnfkaslfa "I'm way too old for you." WELL REALLY. I liked LIT a lot but as a quiet film without much of a statement.

OH GREAT, A FANDOM I KNOW LITTLE ABOUT IN FRENCH. And yet I try anyway. When Oishi was alone in Tezuka's room... *squints* he had the same... question? He contemplated the... wtf, something about where the boy slept. I GIVE UP.

K, is on its way. :D

mmmyeah, I expected way more out of it the first time -- given that it was billed as the comedy of the year and all. It's not really a comedy, more a human-error type thingy OH GOD I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M SAYING.

Hee, as far as I can tell, Tezuka has a cassette player and one tape. He gives Oishi ten guesses to figure out what animal he's recorded on it. Oishi fails to do so and it turns out Tezuka recorded them making out or something. I'm pretty sure Oishi is blushing ... and they're going out, petit ami. It's kind of soothing. English badfic gets sooo boring.
Gin: HUMAN HAIR. FROM MY BACK.backinblack on September 15th, 2006 11:01 pm (UTC)
Awesome! *awaits*

Yeah, it's not really a comedy, although Bill's crazy Rat Pack impersonations killed me dead. I thought it was a lovely human drama type thing, more of a reflection and YEAH I NEVER DO ISN'T IT FUN.

... Well, at least it's horrific in another language. alksnflnkasfa dear god.

Should be sent now. Please tell me if it's bad while I still have time to write another, k!

Yeah, and LIP MY STOCKINGS! Whatever the fuck that was about, I don't know, but I think I broke my stomach laughing.

No, it's kind of cool. No way of knowing if the writing is good or not -- probably is -- but it's very relaxing. You know the way you can just tell even when someone's just slightly off the mark? Yeah, none of that. I must read more French.

I wonder what making out reads like in another language ... off to see ...

Yeah, it seemed decent enough, but my grasp of the French language and its aesthetics is limited to say the least. I can hardly make English sound pretty -.-, who am I to judge someone's French fic?

hahahaha. OMG I am betaing while listening to Christina Aguilera, beware...

I have before and, if this patch is anything to go by, I will again. Honesty is better than ... non-honesty, anyway. :D

Ditto. But now I'm reading a fic in which Atobe is a whore and it's English, so my brain has obviously had enough R&R.

How bad, she has hair like ... oops, like one of the guys in the fic. Nearly gave it away to random readers ...

Have you ever thought about... watching it... Prince of Tennis, I mean. Every time I see you mention how you don't really know much about PoT, I have to remind myself I don't know you and so offering to send it to you would be creepy. sgdfh would you be willing to dl it :-?
Gin: Much more better.backinblack on September 15th, 2006 11:25 pm (UTC)
Hahaha, it is not creepy, it is nice! I think I should probably dl some eps but I know it is a massively confusing fandom and that kind of puts me off.

Maybe you're out of practice? This is not a sly way of prompting you to write more fics. No, not at all... *shifty eyes*

I haven't even started my PoT assignment yet. I'm so uninspired.

Maybe you're out of practice?

I was about to say no way, because I've been writing pretty consistently since I got my summer holidays, but ... I'm writing in a different style now. One that requires little to no effort. I think this is me feeling guilty.

I'd prefer to be uninspired, frankly. At least then there is the possibility of inspiration. :D Thinking about plots is a good way of going to sleep, though.
Serenia: Oishi writingserenia on September 15th, 2006 11:04 pm (UTC)
Haha! Thinking of plots is a good way to frustrate myself and make me want to write instead of going to bed or going to work!

Indeed yes. This is why writing is such an awesome hobby. All the stress and angst you could wish for -- free!

That's it, I'm giving it all up and selling mobile phones for a pastime.

I don't know if this is the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning, but it's the end of something.

Sounds to me like it's the beginning of the revision process. Let the stories sit and stew for a bit, and then take a look with fresh eyes after a few days/weeks. You can't get it right on the first draft every time. (Says the woman who just got the dreaded "this just doesn't work" talk from her editor today...uggggh. I'll be spending some quality time revising a first draft when I get back to the office.)
every Starbucks should have a polar bear: Eggsscoradh on September 15th, 2006 11:13 pm (UTC)
Well ... maybe. I usually have a honeymoon period, where I like what I wrote and felt I achieved what I set out to achieve. That so didn't happen this time; I was writing because I had to, because I had the time, and ... oh, it doesn't matter really. So I let myself down, life goes on.

Ooh, do you write for a living? That's awesome!
secretsolitairesecretsolitaire on September 15th, 2006 11:23 pm (UTC)
Well, I technically don't make my living just by writing. I work in online media, so I do a little writing, a little proofreading/editing, a little (basic) HTML, etc. To be honest I don't think I love writing enough to do it for a living (ie be a freelancer) -- I'd rather be editing or proofreading any day. (If I had more free time I would totally beta for people in the HP fandom -- if they'd have me, of course.)

Re: your own writing...maybe you're just hitting a little slump. Here's hoping it will pass soon! :-)
every Starbucks should have a polar bearscoradh on September 15th, 2006 11:29 pm (UTC)
[ponders] I wanted to be an editor once. Not, obviously, enough to do anything about it. I daresay I'd end up with no hair anyway. Beta'ing is a stressful job, even though it's 'just' fanfic. Editing must be ten times worse. :D

I am ever hopeful. ♥

I used to read fanfic in French and pretend it was almost like studying. 'Twas great fun :)
In fact, I think I'll try and do so again.

Oh, Japan. I wonder what the fascination with it is? Ever watch Jonathan Ross's Japanorama on the BBC? My poor mother is now afraid of Japanese people forever, because the episode last night was about otaku and general anime-weirdness. She spent most of it going, 'DOES THIS REALLY EXIST WTF?!'
every Starbucks should have a polar bear: Back Golden Pairscoradh on September 16th, 2006 08:55 pm (UTC)
I'm just amazed that I can even parse it still -- it's been two years now since I picked up a French book. I guess not needing to know the meaning of every. single. word in case it came up in a question -- and not having to answer questions! -- meant that I could just try getting the gist of it. The fic was pretty cute in the end. (I think.)

I have links if you want, but they're PoT!

anime-weirdness, you say? Us? Never!

Speaking of which, do you happen to know the romanji Japanese word for 'high school'? [puppy eyes]
...chowburger on September 17th, 2006 12:41 am (UTC)
It's probably been two years since I picked up a French book, too. Considering my LC was a couple of months ago, this speaks volumes.
Oh dear, fic from a fandom I don't know in a language I don't know... could be interesting? Sure give us the links anyway :)

I think it was more the breast-pillows and general paedophila that freaked her out.

Erm, junior high or... senior high? Is that even a word? Junior high is "chuugaku" and the other one is "koko".
every Starbucks should have a polar bear: Dracoscoradh on September 17th, 2006 09:32 pm (UTC)
Tsk, tsk. [grins] I learned off one essay about drugs and one about teenage drinking and adapted it to everything. Everything!

Yeah, it's odd that for a culture that's so into the whole sex thing, even shounen-ai, there really is no gay scene at all. You just get married, like everyone's Oscar Wilde or something.

Here are the links! Go, practice, be sucked into the PoT web via FRENCH! :D

Senior high, yeah. In PoT junior high seems to be gakuen? Do you recognise that? :S
...: [Sufjan] Banjos are hot.chowburger on September 17th, 2006 10:48 pm (UTC)
I had sentences like, "[blank] is the scourge of our society!" and "[blank] is clearly a case for the government" and "[blank] is the main issue we see in newspapers these days" and so on and so forth. And I had two proverbs that I stuck into every essay I wrote; the moral of all my essays was either "When in Rome..." or "One swallow doesn't make a summer".

Yeah, it's kind of odd that it seems such an accepted thing in their media, but doesn't seem half as prominent in real life. The fact that the whole culture is BATSHIT CRAZY probably goes a long way towards explaning it, though. I hope I get to go there one day, just to see if all The Weird that my teachers have told me about really exists...

It's like double the multiculturalism or something!

I think gakuen means the school campus or something. Not entirely sure, but I think so.

Maybe I need to watch Lost in Translation again... I didn't really care for it much. I just liked when he appeared on Matthew's Best... Matthew is probably the strangest Japanese person I've ever heard of, haha XD

Made me think of a couple of years ago, when Hyde, the Japanese singer I love (understatement, really), appeared on his show with another member of his band~

I have finished my Christmas fest assignments.

And here I was feeling moderately proud of rewriting my outline in a cafe today. And sign-ups haven't even opened for yuletide yet... D:

every Starbucks should have a polar bear: House on chairsscoradh on September 16th, 2006 08:59 pm (UTC)
Aa, two points about that:

- I don't do outlines. My brain is five and rebels at anything remotely approaching discipline

- I had a vague, universally-applicable outline for the HP one before I got the assignment; and the problem with PoT is not so much not getting ideas as getting them to stop. (Girl!Ryoma? The world doesn't need to see that.)

I'm so not signing up for any more, though! -.- PS your icon? Made of awesome! They clearly make Wonderbras differently in Japan ...
Ria: davide/bane - rokkaku love!kessie on September 17th, 2006 03:32 pm (UTC)
My outlines aren't very detailed (oh, HP taught me how bad that is), but I generally write down whatever ideas first hit me when I thought about m request for a while, and then draw lines to see if I can connect any of them and how I could (plausibly) work them out. Then I try and put in a start-middle-finish.

...it may be good to point out I'm anal about organisation and make a lot of lists in everyday life etc. Also, that my santa_smex outline must be outlined because I want to see if I can add in all five of my pairing requests in some way or another, and anything involving five couples tends to be a bit crazy. :| I'm starting to doubt my sanity a little...

(yuletide is a small fandom Christmas fic exchange, and lots of fun. And the fic is always fabulous. :D [/end subtle hinting]

Oh, I adore Jyousei so much. Kajimoto/Wakato for the win! (Also, ickle!Wakato was the cutest thing ever. Right up there with ickle!Yanagi.) Hanamura is awesome, and yeah, wonderbras really are different in Japan. :))))

re: your assignment, the great thing with this fandom is that people get amazing things out in just 1000 words. Although I would love some longer fics ... still, I have reposoir!
