I really like paper cocktail umbrellas.

And ... parasols.

How can you diss D. Steelsyourheart! She is a forerunner in her field ... although admittedly she's the only one in it ...

I need parasol icons. Why won't lj sell me a permanent a/c? It's pretending they're not there when they ARE.

Yes, she's the only one in it xDDDDDDD

Why won't they sell one to you? They hate you?

Nah, I think the timezone was the killer. I'm processing my payment now, YAYES - ICONS.

She's great when you want to let your brain go on hiatus. It's not like there's any attempt to hide what's going to happen, but she describes food extremely well.

"Parasol" is a good word. And they're good things. Frilly.

Tangentially, my university randomly sent me an umbrella in the mail last week. For no discernible reason. No one else I know got one. Odd, huh?

Mmm, I agree muchly.

Was it a university sponsored umbrella, or just standard issue? Did you lose one in the past that you might have engraved your name on in your sleep? These are the questions Sherlock Holmes would ask.

The weather here is so unreasonable - gale force winds AND needle rain - that umbrellas are actually useless. The campus bins were full of broken umbrellas at one point. I wish I'd had a camera.

It was a university umbrella. A completely mysterious university-branded umbrella. Very strange.

Umbrellas are almost universally useless, I think. Either it isn't raining hard enough to make them necessary, the weatherman predicted sunshine and so you didn't bring one, the rain is going sideways, or the umbrella breaks of its own accord. It's so frustrating. I really need to just invest in some sort of raincoat and boots.

Wow, I don't even think my uni sells those. And they should - rainiest country in Europe etc etc etc.

I so agree! I think the solution is those see-through cloaks with a hood that comes right over your face. A bit like the Outside Suits in the Nome Trilogy (if not read should be). We do really cute rainboots here now, with pretty patterns and so on. I might get some to protect my work clothes. Have they come into fashion in the US of A?

They are neat, hey? I still want to get myself a lace parasol. I have several Chinese paper ones, and one vintage Japanese one, which is lovely, but I'm too scared to use!

Wow, you lucky thing you! A lace one would be ace, I agree. Handy in hot countries where you want some shade (echoes of the Raj) but absolutely useless when it actually rains as even reinforced umbrellas can't take it. Still, that wouldn't stop me buying one if I found one.

What's not to like?

Exactly!

Particularly when they are for cocktails; the way they actually open is so cunning.

Now I am craving a cosmo with all the works, ie, a pretty pretty cocktail umbrella and a pretty pretty bar with me wearing a pretty pretty outfit.

I have every faith that the pretty pretty outfit will include a nifty matching parasol. Am I right or am I right?
Trinity Daytrinityday on July 11th, 2007 12:27 pm (UTC)
Alas, I don't own one. I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for not buying the pretty lace thing I saw in Malta.

Darn. I just have to plan another trip back there to buy myself a parasol.
