Hit by an unforgettable curse

Some good things happened me today! They weren't just amusing, they were actually good.

1. In Communications, we had a practice run of our doing-a-talk-in-front-of-everyone module (it has a proper name, but who cares?); well, it was for two minutes, if you wanted to do it. I said what the hell. It was on any topic, so I chose Troy and 'because the film really annoyed me with all the inaccuracies', I told them the tale as it was supposed to be told, with gods and heroes, from the very creation of the world with Zeus and Cronos and Prometheus. I only got up to the birth of Achilles when I stopped to check how long I'd been talking; three and a half minutes! And everyone in the class went 'Awww!' and wanted me to keep going. Hopefully for the real thing I can fill five minutes with the marriage of Peleus and Thetis, the Golden Apple, the birth of Paris and that of Helen, because that's all I know off the top of my head. (Yay for Roger Lancelyn Green! Having a good memory comes in handy sometimes. Incidentally, I still cannot believe that they killed Menelaus!)

I got heckled by Anthony; for a thirty-year-old, he's really twelve. He passed a comment along the lines of 'You're Australian, sure ye have hardly any history at all' - the implication being, I believe, that who was I to go talking about Ancient Greeks, huh? The girls were very insulted on my behalf, but to be honest, I've got that sort of response my entire life, due to my nationality and knowing things, and far worse to boot; I barely even noticed him.

2. A graphic design class I actually liked! We had to design an invitation to a masked Valentine's Ball, and we were allowed to go on the net to get images. I had a picture of a Cupid/Psyche sculpture in my head after reading The Boy so I found that, and white roses for the background, and shimmery Barbie doll masks, and cut and pasted them about on Photoshop. Although it was only basic technological manipulation, I felt a rare sense of accomplishment at the result, one that I don't get from anything I draw in the first person. I think I'll post it here when I've it printed; the tones even worked well, with white text. Apologies for the waxing lyrical, but as life would have it, I rarely feel this happy about anything, and I spend most of my time playing down my achievements so that people will hate me less. For once I think I did something cool - so there!

3. We finally figured out the story behind Eminem's Like Toy Soldiers video (he is totally the best video artist of today, or ever). The enemy gang comes to kill him but his mate steps between Eminem and the bullet. Yay! I really love the ending of that, and I think it's his best song and video to date. (Not that I own any of his albums; that much swearing does get on my nerves, people like Good Charlotte and Blink 182 find a better balance...my mother has two Eminem albums, though.)

Yeah! Anthony was trying to say that because it's 'only' mythology it doesn't matter what you do to it. At which point class ended, which is good, because someone would have killed him. xD

Anthony sounds like a first-rate ignoramus.

On the bright side, you get to talk about mythology in class...grrr.

Yes. Not to mention a UFOlogist!

Pretty cool as well that if I get stuff wrong, nobody will know! Yay! (Because, er, it's not exactly a hot topic with most people I know...xD)

I'm so glad you had such a good day!

1. That sounds so cool! My friend Jeanna is a Classics Major, so she was explaining some of the inaccuracies to us, ie Achilles's "cousin", or whatever he was supposed to be, actually being his lover, etc. I didn't love that movie, for a variety of reasons. Also, weird how they made it seem like the battle of Troy lasted for a week, hm? It sounds like you're totally going to nail your presentation! Public speaking is no picnic; you should be very proud!
It's strange (to me) that you get so much flack for being Australian. Although, being a white American and living in America my whole life, I have never been in a situation where I was teased about my nationality. I'm hardly going to be mocked by my own countrymen.

2. Can't wait to see your card! Sounds very cool and fun.

3. Your MOM has EMINEM CDS? Wow. I actually just heard 'Like Toy Soldiers' in the car with my friend today. I don't really like rap - it's just a bunch of people saying the same thing over and over again, mostly. (Like Marcus said in About a Boy: "It's by black people mostly, and they're pretty angry most of the time. Only sometimes they just want to have sex.") Eminem angers me specifically because of his anti-gay, anti-women bent. Eminem fangirls are the worst. They totally don't realize they're getting dissed. However, he is a very good rapper, as far as rapping goes - very talented, and at least takes himself seriously and isn't just doing it all for the money. His songs are good, if offensive, and he's one of the few artists, and quite possibly the only rapper, who has good music videos. The only rappers I like are The Streets, who are an English rap group that Jeanna introduced me too. I like them because they are absolutely hilarious, although I can't tell whether or not it's on purpose. You should definitely download one of their songs, so we can laugh together. I would suggest 'Don't Mug Yourself'. I don't know, maybe it's only funny to me because of their accents...

Yes; I heard about Patroclus. Now, to be honest, I've only read the kiddy versions of the myths, the watered down PC ones, so while I know the story outline I had no idea that Achilles, not to mind Ancient Greek men in general, were gay. It was only through reading a book my mother brought back for me from Harvard, entitled 'A Mind of Its Own; A Cultural History of the Penis' that I discovered that fact, and after my inital suprise naturaly thought (as a consummate slasher!) that it was pretty cool. I'm starting to wonder, though, if the interlude with Polyxena that apparently led to Paris having the opportunity to shoot him as he left in disguise from Troy was made up or WHAT. Next time you're chatting to Jenna about Classics, you could ask her for me! xD

People always try to get the rise out of you for being different. Oddly enough, I got respect for not taking their shit, even though the net effect of people's attitudes often wore me down quite a lot. (Not that I let them realise that, of course!)

I don't know what Eminem's deal is; after all there was that duet with Elton John, and he's started being anti-Bush, which is a good thing to me. I can only imagine he's either grown up or was only trying to rile people. And I just ignore the songs I don't like!

The Streets are classified as rap?! Jeez louise, I wouldn't have thought so...Cry Your Eyes Out is one of the soppiest songs I've ever heard in my life, including David Bedingfield's shlock. Although the one about the Lights are Blinding My Eyes is pretty ... freaky, and rappish. My mother is constantly mocking his accent! ^_^
