you can take my life but you'll never take my lj!
What I hate most about this sitch - and believe me, I hate lots about it - is the way my little corner of fandom is fragmenting. I'm never going to stop believing that lj, 6A, the American government, idk, just doesn't like the fact that a bunch of girls sit around writing and drawing canonically straight males into homosexual situations. (Taken from the outside it is a bit odd - but it's not harmful!)

I'd have no problem at all leaving lj if there were somewhere for all of us to go. Since this began people have been making posts saying 'here I am at gj/ij/jf/wp'. But because we're an army of ringleaders, no one place has been settled on. Not to mention, I can barely keep up with the flist on this thing, let alone logging in and messing about with three or four journals, and putting the same stuff into each.

I have an account at journalfen (scoradh there too), thanks to oulangi ♥. I'll probably set up a wordpress one, but ... I still feel I'll miss people along the way. It's taken me all the time I've been here to build up some kind of reputation as a writer. I guess that will remain if I keep using the same nickname, but what if it doesn't? And I hate the thought of writing to an empty journal again.

Which is a long way of saying, we've all been royally screwed. And also: fuck.

I DON'T WANNA LEAVE LJ! I just got comfortable and now there's a mass exodus going on *weeps* Plus, like you said, everybody's going everywhere and everything's getting scattered.

Although there is this place called Scribblet that's currently under construction. A lot of people are considering it their LJ alternative. However it is 18+, which is a shame. Here's the link if you want to know more about it: http://twocorpses.livejournal.com/

Scribblet looks very good. I must say I have no problem with the over-18 thing, mainly because I'm well over 18. Besides, as House says, everybody lies. I guess I'll have to sit tight and see where fandom takes us!
November: Cute as Pinovnonna on August 10th, 2007 09:41 pm (UTC)
I'm over 18 myself but I have a few friends who aren't yet. I suppose they could always lie too XD. No one's under 18 forever.

Where fandom leads, I shall follow.

Yeah it sucks. I've been on LJ 3 years and... I'm still basically unknown but I've got a great flist and I don't want to lose them all. And very few of them are upping sticks to JF. Somehow they just don't jump at the whip the way they used to. Most disappointing.
every Starbucks should have a polar bear: Death of Ratsscoradh on August 10th, 2007 09:53 pm (UTC)
I feel like an internet refugee. *sigh* That's what I mean - sans whips, everyone's blindly sending out ten feelers each, and they're all landing in different places.

I've friended you over at journalfen. I'm not sure how much this will affect the PoT fandom, since it's nowhere near as popular as HP, but the 'listing backup journals where you can find me just in case' posts are making me confused as to where the best place should be to migrate.

The PoT fanfic archive that I've started up is on the testing stages right now, and I'm hoping that the site will be helpful to people, in that they'll be able to back up their fics there instead of having to rely completely on LJ.

Cool! I'll friend you back whenever I log in again (admittedly, this may not be for a while - I vacillate between frenetic worry and complete denial).

I think it is hitting HP the hardest - HP artists, HP the high-profile fandom, HP the series focusing on schoolkids. *sigh*

That sounds good - the way things are these days, all our journals could be nixed without so much as a by your leave. Bastardos.
Cedonycedony on August 10th, 2007 10:08 pm (UTC)
That's the thing that gets to me most about the whole business; the journals being deleted without even a warning. I mean, if the LJ staff only understood how awful it is to have a journal that you've placed so much creative input into taken away, with no hope of ever getting back all the data there, then maybe they'd at least let you back up things first before you're banned.

I share your same thought and worries...
I don't want to leave!
But when I see the fandom part of my F List leave, I feel like I have to take actions to keep in touch with them.

Still, I'm frustrated. I don't know where to update, which journal work on making it better... I wish fandom could decide and converge in one place.
It took us years to build the fandom community on LJ, and in just a few days it's being destroyed.

BTW, I friended your JF. I'm remsyluck. Hope you don't mind.

There are no more words for me to say that haven't already been said. I guess, universe willing, that eventually we'll find another place to shelter for a while - a bit like the Nomes in Truckers.

Not at all! Like I told orien, though, it might be a while before I go back there and reciprocate.
Shezan: Ninashezan on August 11th, 2007 08:24 pm (UTC)
This whole exodus thing slays me. I have a GJ and an IJ accounts, but I don't use them except to wail "is LJ down?" when there's a blackout. Does one need to be invited on JF, and if yes, may I beg for an invite? I plan to stay here but it's probably goot to be prepared in case of disaster.

What's happening?
every Starbucks should have a polar bear: Librarianscoradh on August 10th, 2007 11:22 pm (UTC)
OKAY, well. This all started way back during Easter. I wasn't online myself at the time, but I was back for the followthrough. Basically, lj's owners sold the company to Six Apart, which began censoring things left right and centre. A whole bunch of journals were deleted without warning - thus the term Strikethrough 07 was coined. Most of them were HP fanfic journals, like pornish_pixies. Cue huge ruckus, probably the biggest f_w ever, and lj reinstated the journals and made some hand-wavy apology.

Then, about a week or so ago, two HP fanartists' journals were deleted - again, without warning, which violates lj's own TOS. The issue is child pornography and 6A's attempt to crack down on it - all very admirable, but going after people who aren't child pornographers and who are simply drawing highly erotic, if homosexual, art, is not the way to go about it.

Lj have dug themselves a bigger and bigger PR hole ever since - refusing to answer questions, define what is allowed on lj (some more handwaving about 'artistic merit' was bandied about, but not how it's classified or who is doing the classifying - it comes down to individuals reporting the ljs in question because they find some content personally offensive), etc. They won't classify what they mean by 'underage', which differs from state to state to country, or take into account the difference between say 7 year olds and 17 year olds.

It's okay for them to arbitarily ban fanworks, but the main point is that people's ljs aren't just their fanworks. It seems very much as if lj would like fandom off their servers, and they're certainly going the right way about it if so.
Cait: depressedcoralia13 on August 11th, 2007 04:02 am (UTC)
Yikes, that's awful! This censoring stuff sounds ridiculous, but most of all, I agree with the concern you're expressing in your post: this has been the gathering place for fandoms of all kinds. How are you supposed to create a community when everyone's been evicted?

Let me know if YOU go anywhere, okay?
every Starbucks should have a polar bearscoradh on August 12th, 2007 08:48 pm (UTC)
I've been thinking about it from an outsider's POV and, while the actual art may be distasteful to some, the point about free speech (and drawing, I suppose) is that it has to be for everyone, and not just the socially acceptable people. As for your point - word. Although as people keep pointing out, lj =/= fandom. We'll survive.

I won't leave unless I'm deleted, don't worry! And I would always let you know (no matter where you are).
Shezan: Ninashezan on August 11th, 2007 08:25 pm (UTC)
I didn't know about the artists' LJs! Whose were they?

I'm personally not going anywhere. I figure I can do about as much against the idiots who run this place as I can about our immoral, uncaring government - I vote against them at every opportunity, and the bastards still get in.
Same as you, I'm not going to get multiple journals and post the same thing in each, even if I do have the entire day at home every day with little better to do.
every Starbucks should have a polar bearscoradh on August 12th, 2007 08:50 pm (UTC)
Yup, they'll have to forcibly evict me! I guess there are some benefits to being lazy ... :D
The Goddamn Wolf Womanslythwolf on August 11th, 2007 03:24 am (UTC)
In all fairness they can't really say we're doing anything to canonically straight characters until the authors start writing, "Harry Potter [or whoever] was straight," into the books. The way I look at it: until proven otherwise, everyone's bi!

I'm not actually migrating to any one place until fandom_flies picks one for sure. I still read my LJ flist and I plan to stay here until something happens as far as deciding. And in fact when I post something fannish elsewhere I'll probably still post a link to it here, and I'll probably still read my flist here because lots of people aren't leaving. But it is, it's sad. It's extra-sad that a large portion of fandom_wank thinks we're full of shit for caring about our First Amendment rights, but whatever.

Anyway. Friending you at JF.

My theory is that the bulk of fandom will act like a magnet, eventually pulling all of us to the same place. It had to have happened with lj in the first place, right?

Okay, maybe not the best time for friending? ;) Hi ^___^

There are programs such as Semagic where you can cross post journal entries, which is what some of my flist is doing. Check out here for backing up your journal, and here for learning how to crosspost. If you already know this, oops, sorry. So while there isn't a solution for the fragmentations of the flist there are some ways to make it easier.

Hi. I know you haven't decided on if/when ever you might move to another journal spot as of this post, but I was wondering if you had considered insane journal at all? In other words, do you have a place holder there? I'd like to friend you there instead if you do, is why I ask. (yes, its all about the selfishness of me and wanting to read everything in one spot.)

I'm really enjoying 'Owned', btw. Just sharing...

Ack! I've got 'Owned' up in another page getting ready to read. Brain Freeze. And I *meant* Road Less Trav. Sorry!!
