this is why god invented pharmacists
I am very pissed off with my so-called 'friends' right now*. Also: the pharm exam had a question on general anaesthetics, which we haven't covered. I hate when that happens, don't you? I mean, so what if I've seen people being put under anaesthesia (scariest. thing. ever. Don't try this at home, kids)? That doesn't mean that I know halothane is hepatotoxic by process of deduction!

(* One dumped me for her boyfriend, to be known here and forever as Mr Footface [she's clearly never heard of bros before hos, although I'm not sure which one I am]; another reamed me out for being being harsh on the creepy girl who stalks me, even though she doesn't even like her [and harsh? It's what I do!]; the third is a flake, and today cancelled set-in-concrete plans for about the fortieth time, and never answers texts or calls; the fourth has developed the frightening sole aim in life of makin' babies; and the fifth is too cool to hang out with me. An embuggerance on the lot of 'em.)

BUT.

OH, BUT.

The results from the path exam on Monday came out today. Guess who got 92%? OH, YEAH, BABY. THIRD IN THE CLASS, BABY.

And I really didn't think I'd be able to beat my last path score (80%, back in November), which was up to that point the highest mark I'd ever got in this course.

Sorta makes up for the crappy friends, lack of social life, rusty writing skills and silly pharmacology lecturers. In an ickle tiny way.

Yahoo!

Having medical types in my family, when I went through my major ops last year and they asked me if I wanted to undergo surgery twice (once for the hysterectomy and once for a gall bladder) I said NO WAY. Because I didn't want to be put under twice. Anaesthetic is scary stuff!

It is - and not just on the patient's side. None of the ugly, horrible stuff bothers me much, but anaesthetics horrified me. Definitely not my dream job! (They say surgeons have god complexes, but it's the anaesthetists who actually play god.)

Third in the class? That's awesome!

Also, my roommate is currently in the "ignore all your friends" stage of boyfriend-having, and TC has been even more MIA than usual, so I sympathize with you on the friend thing. I am coping by watching Buffy and pondering my exam scores. I see you have one of those methods covered.

Well, it's tied third with four others who got 92% ... but still! Tied third is still third!

I mean, what. Did years of chickflicks teach them nothing? (That's not the guy you went on a double date with and liked, is it?) Man, you still didn't ask him out? Shame. Not that I would, in your shoes. Eh.

I have never watched Buffy! I did, however, rent season 1 of Arrested Development from Xtravision.

Sorry about your friends, and congrats on your path score! But the real reason I'm commenting is because you mentioned halothane!!! There was some really bad reaction in my family a waaaaaays back - maybe a great-uncle or something? - and now we're all supposed to tell drs we're allergic to halothane when of course, no one USES halothane any more, and they usually just look at me funny.... Anyway. :)

I suppose it depends on the context; I mean, if you were visiting a doc because of a headache, or you sprained your wrist, halothane really wouldn't feature highly in your treatment plan ...

Anyway, I think the reason they took it out of commission is because it was toxic for a lot of people.

You don't know me, but I'm stalking you checking out your journal 'cause I read and fell in love with "The Road Less Travelled." I have friended you on this questionable basis.

Am I rather pathetic? Yes, indubitably so. I'm also intimidated and congratulate you on your mark.

Anyway, I've just deduced that this is going to look quite creepy no matter how eloquently I phrase it. Alas. Insomnia has dulled my self-preservation instincts.

Nice to meet you anyway, christina

You're intimidated by the mark or the story? Neither, I can assure you, is worthy of it. (Getting 92% in a pharm exam, now - that would deserve ground-kissing worship from a thousand devotees in parsnip headdresses. But not the others.)

Anyway, introducing yourself is far from creepy. I believe it's quite the thing in most circles. You're very welcome and it's nice to meet you too. Rach.

PS I hope to write some more of TRLT soon.

Congratulations on an amazing result!!

I actually feel a bit guilty for being a bad friend because I am abandoning everyone (by finishing) for work in Australia for a few months.

oops?

Have some chocolate, a cuppa, and curl up with a good book. Who needs friends anyways?

I guess everyone is a bad friend sometimes. I just wish I wasn't always in the vicinity.

I'm re-reading Mansfield Park atm, with Flake chocolate yoghurts on hand - does that count?

Maybe, some day (HURRY UP already), you can diagnose me!

Now that we've established you're (and will be) a very good doctor, will you please also attempt to stay humble and try and remember a teensy bit of your patient's background?
I am so angered by the fact that none of my doctors ever seem to remember exactly why I need to be able to use my foot. Gets kinda old after one year...

But YAY! For you doing so well! Sounds like you're actually liking what you're doing, after all the doubts! That's a good place to be in! *nods*
Congrats and hugs coming your way!

I'm sorry to hear you've injured your foot! That must be like a painter breaking a wrist. Well, never fear: my course has been totally re-designed to factor in the 'behavioural science' element of medicine, complete with focusing on patients' backgrounds and how their illnesses impact them. Hopefully some of that should disseminate to you in time!

Yes, strange as it seems, I'm finally feeling good about where I am in life. This course is fulfilling in a way I'd never have thought possible. It was the right decision, for all it felt like the wrong one.

Thank you! ♥
