watcher of the skies when a new planet
I rarely post twice in the same day, but tonight - in between finding my bedroom floor under three inches of debris, and watching the Christmas special of Lark Rise to Candleford - I attempted to pursue that flighty temptress, adventure. Which is to say I cracked open a textbook, because I spent most of my paediatrics rotation in the gym, and I don't think my skills on the stepper will come into play in the exams.

I found this in the 'Unusual Psychiatric Syndromes' chapter:

Folie a deux (induced or shared delusional disorder)

Folie a deux consists of a delusional belief that is shared by two or more people (usually within a family), of whom only one has the features of a psychotic illness. The pair are often isolated from others in terms of distance or due to cultural or language barriers. The delusion is usually persecutory or hyperchondriacal, and the psychotic individual (principal), tends to be more intelligent and better educated than, and has a dominating influence over, the non-psychotic (more submissive) receipient(s). The diagnosis of the principal is most commonly schizophrenia, but may be an affective disorder or dementia; primary treatment is of the underlying condition. A period of separation of the involved individuals, followed by supportive individual and/or family therapy, may be helpful. Folie a deux is classified as Induced (ICD-10) or Shared (DSM-IV-TR) Delusional Disorder.

Did you guys know about this?! I was surprised, were you surprised? Pete Wentz, surprising me again. I don't know why I'm surprised.

Oh damn that's weird. xD
And not just the fact that it is an awesome disease to evaluate on. But more like this is weird because I had just found it eariler today and you're talking about it right now.

I love how people make up excuses as diseases.
'Wait! My partner's insane, this accounts for my insanity for throwing knives and screaming in bulgarian. I quote folie a duex!'

But, you know. Not.

I think that sounds more like Munchausen's by proxy. :D But I imagine Petey decided we were all sharing in some delusion he created, which. I don't know. Is kind of awesome? But I didn't realise the significance of him calling an album after it till I knew what it was.

That is a rather cool disease. I now demand folie a deux fanfic, with Pete Wentz as either the insane or the subordinate. Not necessarily demand it from YOU, but from, you know, the universe. SOMEBODY needs to get on that. Could be delightfully zany!

*thoughtful* I did read a fic about schizophrenic!Pete once. It was well done but EXTREMELY DISTURBING. I think I'll leave the psychiatric bit to writers who don't like BLUD.

Whenever I see Folie a deux on my flist, I think for an instant that it's an X-Files post. Which is where I learned about it. :)

I bet most bandomers were into the X Files at one point and knew this already, while I was a wide-eyed babe reading a bleedin' TEXTBOOK. Bah. :P
