The School for Husbands, Moliere

I think I'm about four hundred years too late to find this funny.

It's a short little play - so short, in fact, it's more of a skit - about two men who take over the guardianship of a pair of sisters when their parents die. One dude is really nice to his charge and the other is not. The play revolves around the fact that the girls' parents wanted them to marry these men, but only the nice dude succeeds in winning his fair one's heart. I suppose I should at least be thankful that this was the message Moliere chose to perpetrate even though it was 1600-somethingsomething. Unfortunately for the reader's alleigance, Sganarelle - that's the mean dude - is the only funny character.

He describes the fashions of the day:

those sleeves which one sees at table trying all the sauces

Lol. Sigh.

I love Moliere! I'm a sucker for irony and most of his works are full of it. I will confess that I would rather watch a play of his work than plow through it in writing. I have a book or two of his plays and it is a job that I only undertake rarely. There are a few that are funnier than The School for Husbands but I do love that name and I thought the sleeve thing was funny too. I think that "The Amorous Flea" is one of my favorites for some reason. Probably because it seems so circular to me.

I imagine any play would be more enjoyable performed than read, but I am a dumbass and didn't realise he was a playwright till I started reading. That's what you get for downloading blind!

That was the only part of his clothing description I actually got. I think I'd have a better time trying to explain Lindsey Lohan to him.
