Dirty confession: I read bad goodreads reviews for fun. Any writer who wants a boost, just read what people think of hush, hush. It's ... illuminating.

And also a source of news of Vital Importance. Cassandra Cla(i)re? Remember her, guys? Not only did she score an audiobook read by Ed Westwick, but she is having a MOVIE MADE OF HER BOOK.

...

What is this world, seriously.

I'm gonna dust off some fanfic, change the names and publish it. Maybe then I'll get a movie with Alex Pettyfer in it, too!

Huh. And here I thought her books were only average successful and not movie successful.

EVERYTHING is made into a movie these days. Two F Scott Fitzgerald movies are due this year, no less. And she riffed off so many successful movie/TV ventures that it's bound to do well with, uh, the exact same audience.

A movie? Really? Now I'm all depressed about the world.

On the contrary, I am hopeful! I will totally get a movie franchise out of my life, uh-huh. And it will have Jake Gyllenhaal AND James Franco AND Andrew Garfield AND Jesse Eisenberg in it, hahahaha.

That girl. Honestly, I have absolutely no idea why anyone reads her stuff ever. I couldn't even stomach the fanfiction that so many people seemed to love.

But really, Alex Pettyfer? I like. XD

I still can't get over Twilight and all that. Mary-Sues should never hit the big time like that. Every time I walk past merchandise for it, I vomit a bit in my mouth.

It's impossible to judge anything like fanfic fairly or objectively, but I have seen a phenomenon of: one good writer in a small fandom whose work is blown out of proportion through lack of competition, and when competition eventually does arrive, the works have the benefit of tenure. Everyone reads them because everyone else has and if you thought they were okay instead of OMG THE GREATEST EVER, you just assumed you were wrong.

haha, the before she was famous story! Love it.

I love reading bad reviews! It's the basis of my massive love for ferretbrain and Smart Bitches :)

Wow... oh Cassie Claire, fuck off.

Dude, Cassandra Clare's explosion is just... it blows my mind on a DAILY BASIS. I CANNOT understand--if I get into it this will turn into a huge rant on the paradigm of lazy readers but seriously, just... no. BRB WRITING A SHITTY FIC THAT PLAYS ON POPULAR INTERESTS AND NOT MUCH ELSE.
every Starbucks should have a polar bear: Art: Christmasscoradh on March 3rd, 2011 11:54 am (UTC)
I don't actually know if she had an explosion? I do find the people saying 'Oh, Shiver/Hush Hush/rake of similiar genre novels are nothing to Cassie Claire, she is golden' a bit bizarre, but ... getting your book made into a movie is no longer the amazing and rare occurrence it once was. Nor does it guarantee that there was a major following behind it, just that the studio wants to milk the success of say, Twilight or Harry Potter or LotR a few years back with any number of lookalikes.

Guys, I would have never known that Cassandra Clare the HP fanfiction author writes her own books nowadays if you would not have flamed her here. So I got curious, googled it and have been reading ever since. I never read any fanfic by her, I didn't like the Trilogy when I tried and left it be. But the City of Bones got me, starting from page number 5 or so. The plot is really very engaging. It is no undieing literetury like Pushkin or Wilde, but which Fantasy novel is? And So I really don't understand your level of scorn reagrding the matter!

So you have read fanfic by her.

The plot is really very engaging. It is no undieing literetury like Pushkin or Wilde, but which Fantasy novel is?

I don't know ... maybe ... Tolkien? CS Lewis?

It's nice that you enjoyed her book. I did not enjoy her book. YMMV. The scorn you talk of is arises from the impression that many fandomers got, that she adapted her fanfic - which created a storm of scandal due to her plagarising - for publication, succeeded in this and now is getting a movie made from her books. It's understandable that you don't get this if you were not in fandom at the time.
