When life gives you lemons...ask for potatoes.

Nothing much happening in my life right now, hence the dearth of updating. However, two things may prove to be bountiful in terms of RL MSTing (which is how I’d define my life: sitting defiantly on the sidelines, spitting down on those with their pom-poms and ‘live it to the fullest!’ brand of rah, and just generally laughing at people). The first is a disco in McCarthy’s pub (disco is just THE naffest word), Saturday night, in support of buying the local GAA club new hurleys. I could care less about the GAA, and much less their hurley-less-ness, and I’ll still have to pay five euro to get in. While on the sliding scale of nightclub entrance fees this is small beans, it still rankles to have to give tacit support to this silly association.

But I’m sure someone’s said it: A disco is a disco. (Errr…word hate.)

The other thing is my long-awaited first step into the world of higher education. It could be argued - not least by me - that a PLC college couldn’t rank as ‘high’ in edifying terms, but I’ve made my bed and now I must draw in it. And hope that a Fine Art degree (which beckons from the future) suddenly becomes more fiscally rewarding than it currently is. It means, anyway, that I can finally get a proper start on my portfolio (as I don’t think badly-drawn manga is going to get me very far…unless you count the local dole office as ‘far’). So, lots of new people, a new place, the dreaded public transport…to sum up, ‘utterly terrifying’.

For a laugh, I’ve decided to make a little list of HP ships I sail on, swim alongside or eye up speculatively through a telescopic thingy. (I’m terribly au fait with nautical terms, as is painfully evident).

Note: I’m making no assertions that any of these are canon (they’re not and probably will never be). Like everything else, this is for my own, pure, unadulterated, completely misanthropic enjoyment.

Harry/Draco - (tenuously OTP) I’ve been trying to figure out why this ship appeals to me so, with little success. Basically my support of a ship stems directly from one, or a couple, or well-written fanfics in the ship, along with a healthy dose of potential UST thrown in for good measure. I think my liking may be due to the angst between the pair, who clearly dislike one another immensely. Why? Because one of my greatest loves in recent years was a boy with whom I had THE most dysfunctional, abusive, painful relationship EVER; on his part, it nearly verged on bullying. Read: transferral. Also, Draco’s constant picking on Harry could be a cover-up for a twisted, never-possible-to-reveal regard for him. Potentially. That’s the only way to write it, anyway, as Harry hasn’t shown much development of feeling for him as of yet. Main meter of affection for this ship: any work by Maya. Absolute genius.

Sirius/Remus - A ship I would admit is the closest to being canon of any of the slash ones, but one I was also ambivalent about until lately. Then, I discovered the Shoebox Project, which, in my terms, is Maya-style R/S. Completely sold me. Generally, though, the necessary angst, the short-time span in which anything of a lasting romantic nature could occur and the ‘betrayal’ (Sirius telling Snape where to find a werewolf; never stuck me as a big issue when reading the books, but man have the shippers inflated it, you cannot find a R/S fic out there that doesn’t make some reference to it) make it distasteful to me. I prefer more scope.

Remus/Snape - Well, they’re both teachers. And in my mind hate seems to be a great basis for starting a meaningful relationship. Really, though, if you hate someone as much as Snape does Lupin, the very fact that you’re not totally indifferent to them leaves the way open for possibilities. Plus, they are the only two of this age who are potentially attractive enough (to me) and still ALIVE enough to be slashable. (While, say, Dumbledore fics don’t squick me, the extreme age of the characters makes fluff silly and porn unattractive. Sad but true.)

Harry/Zacharias - An interesting dynamic. Someone who’s bolshy towards Harry without being Evil. The idea of a besotted Harry and an indifferent Zach carries weight with me (plus it’s the only way I’ve seen it done). On a purely superficial level, he, like Draco, is blonde. Which is good for me. I’m shallow, find me someone who cares. And I’M blonde. While JK never specifically stated that either Draco or Zacharias was good-looking (in fact, Draco’s meant to look like a rat), the very fact of their blondeness will make them so in the eyes of the fandom. Along with every other conceivable character. Only Sirius is canon-pretty. And he’s dead.

Hermione/Theodore Nott - JK says on her website that he’s a bookish sort of character. Plus he is enigmatic. I could see Hermione looking for someone she could a) save and b) who would intellectually challenge her. While there is little doubt in my, or many other people’s, minds, that she fancies Ron, in my view he is too doltish for her and while they look set to consummate their attraction in their schooldays, it would be a crying shame if she was shackled to someone so irrational, biased, jealous and lacking in work ethic for the rest of her life. Besides which it would be an extremely combative relationship.

Ron/Pansy - Same reasons as above, only in reverse. They can be stupid together.

Marcus Flint/Oliver Wood - in a minor way. I don’t like Percy as a character which is why I don’t ship him full stop, despite the backstory that puts him with Oliver (and conveniently kills off Penelope thingy. If I did ship the blasted eejit, I’d put him with Crouch. Now there’s a theirloveissocanon). I quite like the Slytherin-Gryffindor face-off, and imagine it could contribute to a lot of exploitable tension. However, much of what I’ve seen makes Oliver a pretty Scottish boy and Marcus an ape with bad teeth, for which I blame the first two films (along with other things, like world hunger. And Colombus? When I get my hands on him, that man is sooo dead). I never read anywhere in canon that Oliver was Scottish or that Marcus had never heard of a little invention called the dentist, nor that either are chick-magnet sluts. I’d like to see a serious fic exploring their dynamic, but I’d probably have to write it myself, which defeats the purpose.

Harry/Snape - Ahh, the jailbait ships. I don’t go in for these in a big way, not through any high-and-mighty moral stance but because most of them are pretty ludicrous. (Lucius tortured Harry. While in potentiality, Harry could shag anyone, a hearts, roses, satin cards and cherubs scene with a dangerous Death Eater who wants him dead….just, no. People refuse to treat ships like this with the seriousness they deserve, which irks me. And I KNOW its just fan fiction.) Any regard for this ship is entirely due to the classic ‘If You Are Prepared’. Cheers, Cybele. I can see why the (dreaded nickname) Snarry thing is so popular; there’s just so much hate and tension to work with, it will never be exhausted. What people do tend to forget is that, like 99% of HP pairings, this is by nature an ANGSTY ship. If writers just kept this in mind, and remembered that there’s hardly likely to be any lovey-dovey talk or action between the two, perhaps this ship wouldn’t get spat upon so much. (There again, the age gap is always going to be a contentious issue, particularly when people write it as chanslash.)

Draco/Hermione - Used to be a particular favourite of mine. Practically sunk now under a wool-factory’s worth of fluff. Mainly because the best writers are in, or tend to migrate pretty soon to, the slash side of things. Het pairings are almost totally the domain of younger, Felton-lovin’, still-in-Princess-mode Suethors. Haha, sucks to be a het shipper.

Lily/James - I can only abide putting James, otherwise, with Sirius, and even then in deference to a subjugated love for Lily. And shipping is actually due to the third film, and what Remus says about Lily ‘being able to see the beautiful in everyone, whether they saw it themselves or not’. This upped my interest in Lily as a person in her own right. (Even though, in reflection, how she is presented in OotP doesn’t support this statement. It did ensure that the cult of Saint!Lily will live on, however). I can imagine her dating Snape (before James) and even loving Remus from afar (either because he’s gay, or just because).

Draco/Blaise - The whole Death Eater love, only with (fandomisitcally) pretty. To me, Blaise=pretty. Just don’t ask.

Erph, that’s basically it. Any good writing sways me, really, no matter who writes it. For myself, I’ve written Harry/ Draco, Hermione/Draco, Seamus/Dean, Snape/Lupin, Sirius/Remus, Sirius/Lucius, Dumbledore/McGonagall, McGonagall/Lockhart, Hermione/Ron, Seamus/Blaise, Hermione/Nott….not much of which really reflects my shipping, but this is Life.

Why am I doing this when I should be writing my personal statement, quite possibly the most important thing I'll ever write?!!?

Oh, yeah.

Re: disco.

Word replacement!

Go American.

And then, unless it's playing music from the 80's with a big shiny ball rotating in the ceiling... it's a club, not a disco.

Well, there's often a light machine. This passes for total cool in rural Ireland. And a dj. But he would play current mainstream music, I imagine, as the social conciousness wouldn't accept anything else. I really wouldn't call it a club, though; that implies dressing up and shiny bars and bouncers and lots of sparkly whereas a 'disco' in McCarthy's is just a rather squalid little pub with music in...xD
high and mighty mansplaining robotrimestock on September 19th, 2004 03:44 pm (UTC)
Hmmm... there is that, I suppose. And as at least a few people do consider that to be necessary for their definition of "club" then I guess you're just screwed, aren't you? :P

Heh. In the end, I didn't go, and they didn't go because it wasn't on! The lads ended up in another pub, snogging each other's boyfriends...ah, the little poppets...

One of the bars around here that's become a notorious gay hangout has been trying to lure straights with its "straight friendly nights." These always include disco.

And then they wonder why it doesn't draw in the straight business. For that matter, the gay people don't show up, either.
every Starbucks should have a polar bearscoradh on September 17th, 2004 02:47 pm (UTC)
Lord, you'd think they could have one bar for both, really. Over here, though, 'disco' doesn't mean 'disco' in the music-genre sense, just a place where there's alcohol and music and you can dance, as opposed to a place where there's alcohol and you only dance if you're too drunk to see why it wouldn't be a great idea...xD
The Light Snarktasticsnarkophagus on September 17th, 2004 09:02 pm (UTC)

"Disco" over here is just an excuse to get drunk and pray no one has a camera.

Boise has two gay bars. They're frequented by straight people, as they apparently have better music, except for the one on its aforementioned disco days. Still, they go to great lengths to preserve their 'gay bar' image, which I've never understood. Booze + music = universal human pastime. It's not as if gay people have the patent on it...
every Starbucks should have a polar bearscoradh on September 18th, 2004 12:34 pm (UTC)
Stereotypically gay people do a lot of things better than straight, like dress; perhaps the perception extends to going out as well! And musical taste...xD
