L'espoir ne fait pas de poussiere

Just thought I'd share.

Are you?

Oof, so many fandom things I could say, but I'll leave it to those better qualified ... because I am happy. Such a transient emotion should be celebrated.

Gosh, this is very...different! Wow. I must come and have a good look round later.

Right, problems with birthday fic. GOOD problems. The fic was originally going to be a fragmented, five or six part thingy. I've now decided, after the first part ran to over 4000 words, that it's going to be a series of self-contained stories, which will keep me focused and be fun to do, I hope. If the inspiration holds up! But if it doesn't, I can always leave gaps between fics, can't I?

The first one, though, is nearly finished. Okay, I have to do some serious work today, and probably won't have it near ready for posting yet, but my worry is that if it's ready before Thursday I may post it a bit earlier than your birthday, though I will try to resist.

Now, I detest getting birthday presents early: memories of a period when I never got a thing on my actual birthday. You've had a pressie, I gather, and feel quite happy about that, so possibly won't mind, because it was still written for you and with you in mind and is quite happy and only tiny islands of angst in there. But please let me know if there's a problem. My idea is to give you the whole shebang, which will end up as fairly epic, I really hope, though made up of digestible, bite-size pieces. Even if one bit's early, if I'm lucky there may be another part quite near your birthday as well.

Please let me know thoughts on this. It wouldn't be ready before Tuesday, though having said that it may be ready tonight. But I won't do anything till I've heard.

So it's going to be a chaptered fic! I'd love to see that from you; mmm, more lovely UST ... I'm sure you'll be able to keep up the inspiration; R/S NEEDS you!

Considering you are giving me 'the whole shebang', I don't mind when I get it. I deem this week my birthday week, huzzah! I'm so greedy. Anyhow, the main thing is that you're writing -- and writing happy fic! -- not that it follows a timetable. Do what you feel is best, dearheart. You know I'll always read it anyway. <3
Minnowminnow_53 on April 11th, 2005 05:12 am (UTC)
No, it's not chaptered: it's like an arc, I think, with self-contained fics that go together to make up a whole, if it works, but which can be read quite apart from each other. In fact, they all have to be in different universes!

I hope you'll enjoy it is the main thing! The first one probably won't be till tomorrow or Wednesday, which is just as well, because Astra and Kabeyk have persuaded me to put the AU back up and on to RxS, so I'll need a couple of days to recover from the flames! Not sure it's a great idea, but still, I wrote it, so I suppose I should stand by it. Dubious.. The adoption thing was part of the AU-ness, btw: it was meant to be this incredibly liberal wizarding community in what is turning out to be Connecticut!

Anyway, enjoy the start of your birthday week! Who is the couple on the background of your new journal? Should I know? Sorry if I'm being even more ignorant than usual.

every Starbucks should have a polar bearscoradh on April 11th, 2005 05:22 am (UTC)
Oh, I see! That sounds just as good and with a lot less committment pressures than a novella! I should try it. (Yes! I am writing! I am happy.)

That's what imadra_blue told me, be proud of your work and share it. I have my doubts; I'd love to take down some of my stories that I don't like but you can't from FA. Still, I reckon your AU has merit and no one flamed you -- they just concrited!!

I have NO IDEA. I think I googled 'manga' or 'yaoi' months ago and brought it up. It looks to me like a doujinshi -- Japanese fanfiction, they publish it you see. Or, it could be Duo and Heero from Gundam Wing manga, 'cause one of them has long hair (they're both definitely male!). I just like the pretty. xD
Minnowminnow_53 on April 11th, 2005 06:25 am (UTC)
Well, they are pretty! And very inspiring.

It felt like being flamed: well, one set did. But I am terribly paranoid about comments. I need to put the fic back up simply to get myself hardened to criticism. And remember that I liked the fic in the first place, and thought it had something. Plus I can't do the spinoff if nobody's seen the original.

*giggles* It's so fun being on the net in the daytime and not having to pay for't.

I know what you mean! The merest hint of a bad line can set me off too. Pisceans and Ariens with their really thin skins, eh? I mean, the last thing I sent to beta had me in tears when it came back. But concrit is only supposed to make you better at what you do; if it hurts now -- or so I tell myself -- it'll hurt less later when people don't need to give it any more! Although I don't really like the thought of there being nothing left to learn...
Minnowminnow_53 on April 11th, 2005 06:55 am (UTC)
Pisces and Aries are THE WORST. We need to be dipped in salt water or something...

My problem is, I get sulky and think, ha, there are far worse fics on remusxsirius getting praised to the skies. And that is so, so unfair of me. Plus childish, probably. Of course, there are millions of better ones being praised, or not being praised, so it evens out.

I mean, the last thing I sent to beta had me in tears when it came back.

*big hugs* Sorry to hear that: amazed too, actually. But that's why we need betas and readers, because it really is impossible to see work from the outside, until a while later. And then it's too late! On the other side, it's so easy to see flaws in other people's work that may not even matter, but once you've seen them they loom so large. I do hope it's one you revised doggedly, and have posted/will post. It's always worth doing the work on it, however disheartened you are. Just for the practice, if nothing else.

My beta has strange taste: two of my fics that went down very well she really hated, I mean, REALLY hated. One of them I nearly didn't post. It was like, 'Oh, well, some people will read that sort of thing.' Now, I just ask if it's okay to post, objectively, so I won't make a complete idiot of myself. Easier that way. The irony being that she loved the new one that I'm reposting... And I do trust her, because though we shout at each other she does know what she's doing.

every Starbucks should have a polar bearscoradh on April 11th, 2005 07:18 am (UTC)
Childish? Maybe. I feel the same. It's not so much that I see better, except in some cases, it's more that I see stuff that's kind of dull and okay written but my lines are sometimes better -- yet these people have huge coverage and flists and I'm just bloody jealous! Can't help it!

Well, it is one that I hope will be posted and continued (by me). Its the mystery ship -- might as well say in case it never gets up -- Terry Boot/Michael Corner. I totally rewrote it from scratc but she won't be free for a while to beta, we've both got the BB to write. xD

There's no accounting for taste, I guess! All of your fics reach a pretty high standard, so I shouldn't worry too much about her shouting!
Minnowminnow_53 on April 11th, 2005 08:32 am (UTC)
The most important thing is that you went back to it and worked on it and rewrote it rather than either defiantly posting it anyway or chucking it back into the Word document pool. Once you can do that, you can survive as a writer. I still wonder how many chapters of Grawp JKR chucked out on her editors' advice! Could always have been more... So, well done, you: impressive commitment. I hope we will see it. Certainly an unusual one.

She's okay! She can look at work and say whether it's reasonable or awful without having to like it! Which is just as well.
